5 Reasons to Teach Group Fitness


I have recommended becoming a fitness instructor to many friends and students.  I truly feel that it is the best part time job out there.  It works especially well as a part time job for students and/or parents.

Here are my top 5 reasons I think someone should consider becoming an instructor!

1. Flexibility in you Schedule!

Classes are usually offered 7 days a week in both the morning and evening.  Also, not all classes are a full hour, some classes are only 30 minutes.  There is a lot of freedom in designing your schedule as a fitness instructor.  However, keep in mind that with a busier schedule, the hunt for a gym that needs a class during your available time will be harder.

The flexibility is a huge asset to me.  As a homeschooling mom I have to be creative with my work schedule.  A 9 to 5 just doesn’t work for my family at this point.  When I first started homeschooling I never considered becoming a fitness instructor, but once the pieces started falling into place I realized what a great option it was.

2. Free Kid Care!

So this obviously only applies for the parents out there – but it is an awesome perk!  The most enticing reason for me to return to the gym after having my three kids was because I got two hours of childcare a day.  It was my sanity break.  Also, it gave them time to play with other kids!  Win-win!  Not all gyms offer free childcare (or childcare at all) – so make sure to ask ahead of time.

3. Free Gym Membership!

I can  never go without a gym membership again.  I just love group fitness classes and do not get the same enjoyment from running around the block or doing home DVD workouts.  But the cost can add up quickly.  One of my favorite perks is getting a free membership at whatever gym I teach at!

4. Paid to Exercise! 

Most people teach group fitness part time and make a modest amount.  However, ultimately we are getting paid to stay fit.  It’s a nice gig.   Plus!  That free gym membership!

5. Meet Great People!

Let’s face it, it can be hard to meet new friends as an adult.  However, some of my favorite friendships that started in the last few years began at the gym.

BONUS: Makes you happy!

To quote Elle, “Exercise gives you endorphins.  Endorphins make you happy.” (Legally Blond)  It is a job that when I leave, I feel better than when I came in.  I truly enjoy seeing the same faces every week and knowing that we are all keeping our bodies healthy together and having fun at the same time.
